Encebado Fire

On the 4th of July, 2003 lightening struck in the Encebado Canyon and ignited what grew into a 5,400 acre forest fire. Beginning less than a mile from the world renown Taos Pueblo historic monument. Over the next eleven days the fire spread east into the mountains and the Rio Pueblo watershed.

Over a thousand firefighters were called in to fight the blaze. They utilized 15 aircraft and a half dozen bulldozers to contain the fire. In spite of the severity of the fire there were no fatalities or loss of structure. But to the Taos Indians the damage to their watershed and sacred areas will be felt for a generation or more.
